Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder: When Food is the Treatment but Behaviors are a Barrier

Description: Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) is increasingly recognized and diagnosed. Characterized by limited diet variety, fears around food, and/or inadequate food intake leading to nutritional and/or psychosocial impairment, ARFID greatly affects the quality of life of those experiencing it. The goal of this session is to equip dietitians to recognize ARFID and provide them with an understanding of treatment options and strategies.
About the Speaker: Savannah Weeks is a registered dietitian specializing in eating disorders, with a particular focus on Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder and picky eating. Through her work at MUSC’s Center for Eating Disorder and her private practice, Changing Tides Nutrition, LLC, she provides nutrition counseling to individuals ages 5 and up experiencing eating disorders, picky eating, and/or struggles with food, body image, or exercise. In her free time, she enjoys riding her bike and singing with the Charleston Symphony Chorus.

Description: In this presentation, McKenzie Caldwell, MPH, RDN, will dive into the crucial role of medical nutrition therapy in treating infertility. From diagnoses like PCOS and endometriosis, to male-factor infertility and “unexplained” infertility, the dietitian’s role in supporting couples trying to conceive is crucial. While the traditional medical model may not always acknowledge the impact of improved nutrition on fertility and preconception health, the science is there, and “just lose weight” is not the answer to our patients’ problems. In this informative session, learn how to support couples in nourishing their bodies so they can build the families they’ve always dreamed of.
About the speaker: McKenzie Caldwell, MPH, RDN is the founder and lead dietitian at Feed Your Zest Nutrition & Wellness, a virtual group practice focused on helping folks heal from perfectionism around food and their bodies so they can live fully nourished through fertility, pregnancy, and beyond. McKenzie lives in Concord, North Carolina with her boyfriend and their three dogs.
